NeoCell Super Collagen Review: Solid Option from a Solid Brand

Key Takeaways (TL;DR)

  • Collagen supplementation is considered safe and has been shown to support joint health, prevent skin dryness, slow the development of wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity.
  • If you have joint or skin concerns or want to take proactive steps, adding a high-quality collagen supplement to your anti-aging routine is worth a try.
  • NeoCell is an established brand offering several collagen products in powder, capsule, liquid, and gummy forms.
  • The powdered NeoCell Super Collagen is an excellent choice because it provides an effective dose of collagen and could be easily added to your coffee, tea, smoothie, or any other beverage.
  • Overall, the NeoCell Super Collagen products are rated very highly by consumers, with many stating ease of use and noticeable benefits, some pretty life-changing. Still, some say they had problems mixing, while others did not notice any effects.

Things NeoCell Gets Right

  • Uses hydrolyzed collagen sourced from grass-fed cattle
  • The powdered form is versatile and easy to use
  • Contains type I and type III collagen
  • Minimal ingredient list with an effective dosage of collagen
  • Supported by research to improve skin and joint health

Important Considerations

  • As with any collagen supplement, it requires time to start working once you add it to your daily routine
  • Only the “Plus” version contains vitamin C (which boosts collagen production) and hyaluronic acid

NeoCell Super Collagen in a Snapshot

NeoCell Super Collagen is a powdered collagen supplement that dissolves into cold or hot drinks. It’s available in unflavored or flavored formulas. It can also be added to other recipes, including baked goods, soups, and more.

Collagen is a type of protein that is naturally produced in the body. It’s found primarily in structural parts of the body, such as skin, ligaments, tendons, bones, joints, hair, and nails.

As we age, the body becomes less efficient at producing natural collagen. (1) Promising research shows that supplementing with collagen peptides, aka the building blocks of collagen, may support our bodies in making more collagen, leading to improved skin and joint health.

NeoCell is one of the oldest collagen supplement brands on the market, offering quite a few different collagen products containing collagen by itself or in combination with other beneficial ingredients. The supplements are available in powder, liquid, capsule, and gummy form. In this review, we will focus on the three versions of NeoCell Super Collagen.

These popular products contain hydrolyzed type I and type III collagen, which is sourced from grass-fed bovine, also known as cattle. Hydrolyzed collagen refers to collagen proteins that have been partially broken down into smaller pieces, called peptides, so the body better absorbs them.

The three versions of NeoCell Super Collagen Peptides differ in the following ways:

How to Take

To take, dissolve one scoop of NeoCell collagen powder into any hot or cold beverage of your choice. Some consumers report that NeoCell dissolves better in a hot beverage.

As with any collagen supplement, daily consistency is the key. In addition, it may take 6–8 weeks of consistent use to begin experiencing results.

The Research Behind the Ingredients

There are many variations of collagen product lines from NeoCell, containing different doses of collagen. For this review specifically, we are looking at NeoCell Super Collagen Plus Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid and Super Collagen Peptides (there are two versions of the products, one containing 10 gram of collagen and the other 20 grams).

Below we will discuss the ingredients and the research used in these product lines.

Hydrolyzed Bovine Collagen

Collagen supplementation is linked to improved skin elasticity and hydration and diminished the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The collagen in NeoCell’s supplements is sourced from grass-fed cattle and is hydrolyzed, which means the proteins are broken down into smaller pieces that the body can better absorb. (2)

NeoCell Collagen supplements contain type I and type III collagen peptides. There are five types of collagen, but I and III are most commonly found in supplements. Type I collagen is the most abundant type of collagen in the body, found in skin and structural tissues. Type III is also found in the skin and organs and plays a role in blood clotting. (3)

Studies show promise for oral collagen supplementation as an anti-aging strategy to slow the development of wrinkles, prevent skin dryness, and improve elasticity. The amount of collagen present in NeoCell’s powders is the same or more than used in studies, so that’s a good thing.(4, 5)

Additionally, studies showed that collagen may help support joint health and relieve symptoms in those with osteoarthritis. (6, 7)

Note: There are 10 or 20 grams of collagen in Collagen Peptides and 12 grams in the “Plus” version.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant capable of boosting immune function and fighting molecules, called free radicals, that damage cells and contribute to aging.

Overall, vitamin C helps boost collagen production. Specifically, many studies showed that vitamin C supplementation results in increased production of type 1 collagen. One serving of NeoCell Super Collagen Plus contains close to the recommended amount of vitamin C (120 g) most adults need in a day. (8, 9, 10)

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the body, particularly in the skin and connective tissues. It is known for its moisture-retaining and skin-hydrating properties. The skin alone holds 50% of the body’s hyaluronic acid, which can keep your skin moisturized.

Studies have shown that supplementation with hyaluronic acid helped improve skin moisture and relieve dryness. Other studies also show that HA helped reduce wrinkles and smile lines (also known as crow’s feet). (11, 12)

Hyaluronic acid supplementation may also help relieve mild knee pain, including in those with osteoarthritis, according to studies. (13)

NeoCell’s Plus Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid line contains 60 mg of vitamin C.

Safety Considerations

Oral collagen and hyaluronic acid supplements are generally considered safe with no side effects for healthy individuals. (5) However, these NeoCell collagen supplements are made from cattle. Therefore, anyone who avoids animal products, such as vegetarians and vegans, shouldn't take this collagen type.

How This Collagen Powder Compares to Alternatives

NeoCell Super Collagen is an excellent choice for a collagen powder. It comes from a well-established brand, contains types I & III hydrolyzed bovine collagen in an adequate amount, is third-party tested, and has great reviews.

Here is how it compares to a few popular products:

The main difference between the brands is the collagen dosage and the addition of other ingredients. At this time, the optimal dose for collagen has not been established by the FDA. Most studies show that 10 grams per day is sufficient to produce results.

In addition, the inclusion of vitamin C and hyaluronic acid is supported by research to increase collagen absorption and production. So paying extra for these ingredients may be worth it.

In many other ways, all three bands are very similar. Choosing between them may come down to trying them all to see which taste, texture, and ease of use you prefer. However, some consumers report that although Vital Proteins is more expensive, it mixes easier and is truly flavorless.

Reasons for Trying
I wanted to add collagen to my anti-aging regimen. I experimented with other collagens, and found that I did not get the same results. After taking a break from Neo Cell Super Collagen and starting another brand, I found that there was a difference. My knee joints did not hurt as much. I struggled with getting my hair to grow back after dealing with side effects from medication. My hair has grown back longer and thicker than it was before I started Neo Cell Super Collagen as part of my daily routine. I love this product
